From the start menu, if you click 'My Recent Documents' (or 'Documents' based on different versions of your windows) you will see a list of recently opened documents, images, files as a list. The main purpose of providing this feature is to simplify opening of files that you use often. By clicking this file in the list, the appropriate application to view that file will be automatically opened. This saves time. However, if you are not the only person using that computer then this feature enables others to know which files you used previously. If you do not want others to know your recently opened files then follow the steps as below to clear your recent documents list.

Right click on the 'Task bar' and choose 'properties' to open 'Task bar and start menu properties' window.
In the 'Task bar and start menu properties' window choose the 'start menu' tab.
Now click the 'customize' button to open the 'customize start menu' dialog box.
In the 'customize start menu' dialog box click the 'advanced' tab.
Here uncheck the 'List my most recently opened documents'
Then click 'clear list' button
Then click 'Ok' and close the dialog box.

From now, the documents you view will not be listed under the 'My recent documents' list. So others will not be able to see what files you were using.

Out of curiosity we install many programs. But we never use them. We don't even worry about removing or uninstalling them. Those who want to uninstall sometimes are unaware of the right methods of uninstalling. If you are one of those then you can follow these steps to remove the programs in windows.

From 'Start' goto 'Programs' or 'All programs' and then place your mouse over the application that you want to uninstall. In that program group, there will be an icon for 'Uninstall'. Click on this 'Uninstall' icon to which will run automatically and remove all the related files from your computer.
From 'Start' goto 'Settings' and click on 'Control Panel'. In the 'control panel' look for the icon named 'Add/Remove programs' to open the add/remove programs window. In this window, there will be a list of all the applications that can be uninstalled. From this list select the program that you want to uninstall and then click on the 'Uninstall' button at the bottom.
Some applications may not have the above two options and therefore cannot be uninstalled or removed using the above two options. For such programs, open the 'Windows explorer' and look for the folder that contains the program you want to uninstall, then 'Delete' the whole folder. But remember, deleting the folder maynot remove the application fully as some of the related files maybe in some other system folders.
Another method is to use third party utility such as 'Spring cleaning'. Such utilities are mainly used to remove unused applications.

Note: While uninstalling applications, there maybe a popup window saying that some of the files are shared by other application and asking you to confirm whether you want to delete them. Such files are usually (.DLL) files and if you are not sure then it is safe to leave these dll files.

When you bought the computer the engineers may have given these advise to you. Or when there was some problem in the computer and you went for repair the support engineer may have cautioned you about these tips. You may even have tried these once and then forgot about it. It becomes a MUST to keep your harddisk healthy and clean for your computer to function properly at all times. Therefore I advice you to print these tips and paste it in your computer room so that you always remember to follow these advice. Virus Scan: At least every fortnightly you should scan your computer for viruses. Or atleast configure your Anti-virus software to auto scan at preset intervals. Almost all the Anti-virus software comes with this scheduled scanning feature. This is called AutoProtect. Set this feature ON. Likewise if there is a virus then what to do, do you want to delete it, if not possible to delete then quarantine it etc. You can set these options in your Anti virus software. Also remember to update the virus definition files of your Antivirus software often. Or select the 'Live Update' option so that the Antivirus software is always upto date. Another essential software you should have is 'Adware / Spyware' removal program. Though this is not as important as the Anti virus software it is better to have a Adware Spyware removal software. Only then you will be notified of malicious spy programs that spy on your private information. ZoneAlarm is a free software that detects Adware and Spyware in your computer. So download and install this free software. Some unwanted files occupy your harddisk space. Your computer will detect these unwanted files and delete them to free your harddisk space. For this you have to do 'Disk cleanup'. In your windows explorer select 'C' drive and right click and choose 'properties'. In the new window that opens, you will see a small pie chart which shows how much of your hard disk is currently occupied and how much is free. In this window you will see the 'Disk cleanup' button. If you click on this the Disk cleaning process will start. It will show you how much space can be freed. If you are doing this first time, you will be surprised that the unwanted files occupy so much space. Due to curiosity you may have installed many programs and applications in your computer. Some of the applications you may have used once or twice and may have forgotten about the application. It is a good practice therefore to remove these unwanted applications from your computer every now and then. To do this, goto Start,Control Panel and click on 'Add/Remove Programs'. In the 'Add/Remove programs' window you will see a list of all the programs installed in your computer. It will also show you when was the last time you used each program. Here you can select the unwanted application and uninstall. You can also manually look in to your 'My Documents' folder or any other folder that you frequently use to store your files and see if there is any unwanted file and delete it. If you use 'Outlook' to view your emails then all your emails get stored in your inbox and trash folder. You can clear unwanted emails from outlook to save a lot of space. Similarly you can also clear history from your internet explorer. Your browser keeps in history some files from each website you visit. So if you have not cleared history files from internet explorer for quite some time then it may occupy a lot of space in your harddisk. Therefore it is best to goto 'Tools,Internet options' and then 'Delete Temporary internet files' and clear history from there. You may also 'Delete cookies' and 'Delete Files'. You may have kept shortcuts to many programs and applications in your desktop. It is a good practice to keep your desktop clean by deleting unwanted icons from desktop. Remember that deleting shortcuts does not delete the application. You should uninstall the application from 'control panel->Add remove programs'. Also remember that just deleting files DOES NOT free space. Because windows will store all the deleted files into 'Recycle Bin'. So you have to 'Empty the recycle bin' in order to delete the files permanently and free space in your hard disk.

Open your windows Explorer
In the Windows Explorer window, select 'Tools->Folder Options'.

The previous versions of XP Firewall was easy to configure. Previously it was enough to just select 'Network Connections' and click the 'Advanced' tab and just select the check box for the firewall and you are done. But now, there is a separate icon in the control panel for Firewall. Open the control panel and click on the 'Security Center'. In the new 'Windows Security Center' window you can 'On/Off' the windows firewall.

Now click on the 'Windows Firewall' link to open the 'Windows Firewall' dialog box.

In the 'General' tab click on the 'On' radio button.

The next tab is the 'Exceptions' tab. Here you can specify the programs that you want to allow through the internet. If you have a network and allow your internet to be shared by other computers in your network then you should use this feature wisely. Here you can list the programs that you do want to allow your other users to use. The buttons below (Add program, Add port, Edit, delete) can be used to add or delete a program in the list. A check box is given at the bottom to specify that the firewall should prompt and alert you when a program is blocked by the firewall.

The next tab is the 'Advanced' tab. There are three sections in this tab. The first one is the 'network connection settings'. This is for those heavy internet users who use many networks to connect to internet. If you are a normal internet user then you don't have to do anything to it. This is equivalent to the 'Fine tuning' in radios. You can use this network connection settings to allow or disallow the different network services such as FTP, SMTP etc.

If you have bought another firewall and you know that the firewall you bought is more powerful than the windows firewall then you can 'off' the windows firewall and use your favorite firewall instead.

If you are a broadband internet user and your computer is connected to the internet most of the time then make sure that the windows firewall or any other firewall is always turned on.

Among the Windows operating system menus, 'Startup menu' is one of the most important menu but least used menu. Generally this menu is not visible outside. Only if there is any problem this menu becomes visible.

This startup menu has the following startup items, Normal, Safe Mode, step by step, command prompt only etc. If you choose your preferred option the windows will boot accordingly.

The 'safe mode' option in the startup menu is very important. If the computer hangs due to any hardware problems then you can use the 'safe mode' to login and fix the problem. The usual drivers and programs will not run when computer is started in safe mode. In safe mode you can remove adware, spyware and malware.

If you want to give commands using DOS prompt then select the 'Command Prompt only' option.

If you want that the commands from config.sys and autoexec.bat to execute one by one then you can select the 'Step by Step' option in the startup menu. With this you can exactly pin point which command is causing the problem.

In the startup menu if you do not select any options within 30 seconds then windows will use the default option. The default option is the 'Normal' mode.

Now let us see how to bring the startup menu during booting. There are two ways. The first option is by pressing a key while the computer is booting and the second option is by bringing the startup menu automatically without pressing any button.

To bring the startup menu by pressing a key

Turn on your computer. The booting process will now begin. After the basic testing windows will show some system information. Now press the F8 key.

In the black window when you see a small line or square at teh top left corner of the screen you should press F8 key or Conrtol key based on the operating system you are using. If you are not sure try both.

To show startup menu every time the computer boots

In the above method, the startup menu will only appear if you pressed the right key at the right moment. If you missed then the windows will start booting in normal mode without showing the startup screen. But you can make startup window show everytime the windows boots.

The steps given below may differ a bit based on your operating system.

If you are using Windows 98/ME or XP the follow the steps below to show startup screen at every time the computer boots.

Give 'Start->Run' command
In the Run window type 'Msconfig' and press 'enter' key.
The system configuration editor window will open. Windows 98/ME users click on 'General' tab and click 'Advanced' button and then select 'Enable startup menu'. Windows XP users click on 'boot.ini' tab and select the SAFEBOOT check box.
Click on 'OK' button

From now on whenever you start your computer it will show the startup menu.

In Windows 2000 there is no MSCONFIG utility. Therefore Windows 2000 users must use the control F8 key to enter startup menu.

Windows XP stands for Windows eXPerience. Sometimes you may experience strange things while using Windows XP. An allpctips member faced this problem.

She installed a new software in her computer. After the installation windows prompted 'You have to restart your computer', so she clicked on the 'Yes' button to restart the computer. But instead of rebooting, she only saw the infamous blue screen with some STOP errors.

Just as everyone else does, she restarted again and again in the hope that Windows XP will somehow restart successfully but she kept seeing the blue screen. After much frustration and a coffee, she remembered the 'startup menu in windows' and restarted again. This time she pressed F8 to enter into the startup menu.

In the startup menu, she chose the 'Safe mode' thinking everything will be fine now. But to her surprise she still saw the blue screen again. Luckily for her, she remembered there are other options in the startup menu.

So she pressed the F8 key again and entered into the startup menu once again. This time instead of choosing safe mode, she chose 'using the last known good configuration' option in the startup menu. Hoooray, The computer started like a gem without any problems.

Therefore When you see the infamous blue screen at startup, before you decide to format your hard disk, try the 'Using the last known good configuration' from the startup menu.

In Windows, when you right click on any object, you will see a context sensitive shortcut menu. When you select any file or directory in Windows Explorer and right click, you will see 'Send To' option. Most of us do not use this option effectively. In this article let us see how we can use this "Send To" feature effectively in Windows.

By default, the 'Send To' will have a 'Floppy drive', 'Mail recipient', 'Fax recipient' etc. But what if you want to add another drive (for example, your thumb drive) in addition to floppy drive so that you can send any file or folder directly to your thumb drive.

Let us assume that your thumb drive is assigned letter H: and you want to add this drive H to your 'Send To' menu. Here are the steps to achieve this.

Right click on 'Start' and select 'Explore'.
Now scroll down to the 'Windows/Send To' folder in your Windows Explorer. If you are using Windows XP then you will have to set your 'Folder options' to 'Show hidden files and folders'. To enable this click on 'Tools' menu and select 'Folder'. Then click on the 'View' tab and select the 'Show hidden files and folders' and click 'OK'. Choose the 'Documents and settings\username' folder. Note that this username is your name.
Now in this 'Send To' menu you can delete unwanted shortcuts. Here you can add any other shortcut you want to add. You can do so by dragging the shortcut icon and dropping it here. For example you want to add 'Notepad' application here. Then you can just create a shortcut to Notepad here or search for the 'notepad.exe' file and drag and drop a shortcut here. After you create this shortcut you can select any text file later and right click and select this notepad to open that file in notepad automatically.

You can also add a folder to this 'Send To' menu. To add a folder to the shortcut menu follow these steps.

Right click 'Start' and select 'Explore'
Goto 'Windows\Send to\ folder. If you are using Windows XP then follow the steps given above to goto the send to folder in XP.
Now in your windows explorer, right click the thumb drive (eg. H:\Removable disk) and drag and drop it to the 'Send To' folder.
You will see a new menu with many options. Choose the 'Create shortcut' option to create a shortcut to this drive. From now on you can right click on any file and directly send to your thumb drive.

Change a drive letter in your hard disk?

While assembling a computer, usually drive C attains main role and others become subsidiary, while using pen drives the OS automatically assigns an alphabet and later delete it. Do you know you can assign a name using A to Z alphabets? Disk Management snap in software in windows XP provides this feature. A and B letters are assigned for your floppy drive C is assigned disk containing OS. If you don’t have floppy drive you can use A and B for other drives. But you may install floppy drives some day so we will leave out A and B and see how to assign other alphabets.

To assign all favorite letters to a disk drive (or) part of (or) a volume for the first time do as said below. First start log in as user.

1. Then click start=> control panel option, it will list sum of option then select Performance and Maintenance. (Note: This option will be enable only on control panel. So we should open it.)
2. Now click Administrative tools and then double click on computer management. Now some of option listed on the left side of it then selects Disk management.)
3. Now right click on the drive, as you want to create letters, and then click on change drive letter and paths.
4. From that click Add
5. Now default computer mark the type of letter from “Assign the following drive letter” Now you can make changes only by selecting some other type of letter.

We see how to change the type of letter for a drive on its parts
1. Select start=>control panel a window will be open then select “Performance and Maintenance” from that window.
2. Now click on “Administrative Tools” after that double click on computer management. Now you get sum of option from the left side of window here we select the Disk management.
3. Right click on the drive (or) the part on we want change the letter type after that select “change drive letter and paths” from it.
4. Now click on “change” option carefully
5.Now select the type of letter from “Assign the following drive letter” option and give ok to it
6. Carefully give yes when a dialogue box open with the message of whether change the type of letter. Now you got to selected letter types enabled on the drives.

To change the already existing letter, use following
1. Click start=>control panel. Now you get new window. Select performance and maintenance option from that window.
2. Now click on Administrative tools after that double click on computer management. Now select the disk management option from the left side of the window.
3. Right click on the drive (or) part as you want to change the letter type, then “change drive letter and paths”
4. Now carefully click the “remove” option
5. Now you got a dialogue box, which contains the warning message. Click Yes on it. At this time you got the certain type of letter will be removed.

Like this you would apply this option for your drive.

Mostly the peoples confuse both downloading and installing. Installing means process of our computer is preparing for run a program. We give to answer for this questions then it start copy the files to your computer for run the particular program. If we want to run the program we may click the icons in the desktop. Otherwise select the program from star/program menu.

Un Installing:

This is also the reverse process of installing while installing the program. It will copy the files in your computer. When we don’t want the program it’s hard task find and delete the files. Because of that the developers are create one exe file for uninstalling with that program.

We can see the file in program directory. Otherwise we can uninstall the file by select the Add/Remove Program option in control panel. Here all the installed programs are arranged in alphabetical order. We can select the program from the list, which is wanted to uninstall.
